  1. Hi Mick,

Good to see you in top form. Your series on “Authoritarian Democrats” is spot on!

Just one question about the accuracy of this political cartoon. Although I agree with Barak Obama that Hillary is “Bush Lite,” she did, however, vote against the FISA measure. Perhaps she calculated it would pass anyway, with the support of her champions in the Senate, e.g., Dianne Feinstein, and that she could later claim she had no hand in expanding executive powers.

I wouldn’t put it passed her. Nevertheless, the cartoon seems to imply something else, or maybe my reading is just off.

Anyway, it’s a minor point, in light of your extraordinarily accurate analysis of Democrats.

    My compliments.

  2. Hi Diana.

I think it would be unwise to take Hillary’s anti-FISA vote too seriously, but by the same token I didn’t take the cartoon to be aimed exclusively at her. When Luckovich wants to make a general point about Democrats, he often uses Hillary as a stand-in for the party, and that’s what I think he was doing here. She’s ahead on money and in polling, and the Beltway betting is that she’s going to be the next president, so he put her in the chair.

Then again, she’s a mainline DLC honcho and we all know the DLC is in favor of anti-terrorist legislation and damn the Constitution. So regardless of her politically-motivated vote, the alternate interpretation is probably also valid.

I do think Luckovich’s main point – that the Democrats aren’t likely to give up the power once they’ve got it – is unfortunately accurate. Except for Chris Dodd, no pres candidate is making revoking the wiretap bill a campaign stance.

This is not a good sign.

  3. I agree with your take completely.
